Geography
The Seacleft Coast occupies the northwestern edge of Upoceax—a rugged coastal region featuring dramatic cliffs that drop into the ocean. This is a land of precipitous shorelines, scattered islands, and the gateway between the Farlands to the south and the waters beyond.
Boundaries and Position
- Northeast: Eskiloko
- South: The Farlands; the Vokas Enrisikna mountain range marks the boundary
- West: Ocean of Elorinia
Islands and States
The Seacleft Coast is an archipelago region. Its major islands and island-groups running roughly south to north:
- Tyvern Isles (southernmost)
- Iqes — large forested island; the region's most populous state
- Petrona Septia Island — contains the state of Moigos
- Gyosha — rocky island; capital Mirko
- Enavadi (northernmost confirmed state)
Smaller formations scattered throughout: The Pin Isles, The Floss Islands, The Scattered Islands, Starfish Isles, Torguli Islands, Shardmaw Isles, Golem's Teeth.
Terrain
The defining feature is the coastline itself—high cliffs dropping dramatically into the ocean. Island interiors vary from dense jungle (Iqes) to bare rock formations (Golem's Teeth, Shardmaw Isles). Waters between the islands range from navigable trade channels to actively hazardous straits.
Surrounding Waters
- Ocean of Elorinia: The western ocean
- Bejeweled Sea: Eastern waters, between the Seacleft Coast and the interior
Political Climate
No single power governs the Seacleft Coast. The island states maintain informal independence, bound loosely by shared dependence on maritime trade. Iqes is by far the largest and wealthiest, with its foreign-descended merchant families treating the surrounding island-states as informal tributaries—offering protection and market access in exchange for favorable docking rights and first purchase on goods.
The smaller islands resist this arrangement at every opportunity. The Pin Isles and Tyvern Isles have historically aligned against Iqes's commercial dominance; Gyosha's city-state of Mirko plays both sides, collecting tariffs from ships that prefer its harbor to Mjiqa's crowded docks.
Piracy is the region's constant background problem. The Shardmaw Isles and The Scattered Islands in particular shelter vessels of contested legality—whether a ship is a privateer or a pirate depends almost entirely on who owns the cargo it just seized.
What Makes It Interesting
The Seacleft Coast is where the continent ends and the ocean begins. Every major trading route from the Farlands to the western world passes through these waters, making the region's harbor masters among the most powerful figures in Upoceax commerce. The sheer cliff faces that give the region its name also hide sea caves used for generations as smuggling caches and emergency shelters.
The waters are visually extraordinary: deep blue-green channels cutting between pale cliff faces, with island forests coming down almost to the edge in places. Travelers arriving from the east often describe their first sight of the cliffs as the most dramatic coastline they have ever encountered.
What Will Go Wrong
Iqes's merchant families are overextended. Their commercial dominance depends on the Shulka River trade route and control of Mjiqa's docks—both of which are under quiet challenge from a coalition of smaller island-states pooling resources. If the coalition establishes a rival free port, Iqes loses its pricing power and the entire regional balance shifts overnight.
The Shardmaw Isles are escalating from tolerated piracy to organized raiding. Recent attacks on vessels flagged to Gyosha have pushed Mirko toward requesting formal Iqes military support—which would give Iqes an excuse to station warships in Gyosha harbor, something the city-state has resisted for years.
