A prominent rock formation in the northeastern Westwilds where the open grassland meets the foothills approaching the Kharvorn range. The formation is named for Lev—a merchant, a refugee, or possibly a saint, depending on who tells the story—who found shelter here during a deadly storm and survived against all odds.

Geography

Lev's Salvation rises from the grassland roughly 50 miles east of Pystinwood, where the Steppe of Aziirn begins its gradual climb toward the eastern mountains. The formation is a weathered granite tor—a cluster of massive boulders stacked and balanced in ways that seem impossible, creating natural shelters, overhangs, and wind-breaks.

The Main Tor: The largest boulder stack, rising perhaps 80 feet above the surrounding plain. Visible for miles in any direction, it serves as a landmark for travelers crossing the steppe.

The Shelter Caves: Natural gaps between the boulders create cave-like spaces large enough to shelter small groups. These are well-known to steppe travelers and frequently used as camping sites.

The Spring: A small but reliable spring emerges at the tor's base, providing fresh water year-round. This is what makes Lev's Salvation important rather than merely interesting—reliable water in a region where water is scarce.

The Legend

The story of Lev varies depending on the teller:

The Merchant's Version: Lev was a trader caught in a killing winter storm while crossing the steppe. He found the rocks, sheltered in the caves, and survived on melted snow until the storm passed. He marked the location on his maps and told everyone he met, and the name stuck.

The Refugee's Version: Lev was fleeing persecution (the nature varies—religious, political, or simply personal). Pursuers chased them across the steppe until Lev reached the rocks, hid in the caves, and watched the pursuers pass by. They lived in the caves for weeks, eventually emerging to build a new life elsewhere.

The Saint's Version: Lev was a holy figure who wandered the steppe teaching and healing. When a great storm came, Lev led a group of travelers to these rocks and prayed for their safety. The caves appeared miraculously to shelter them, and the spring began flowing to give them water. The formation stands as proof of divine intervention.

All versions agree on the essentials: someone named Lev, a desperate situation, and survival that shouldn't have been possible.

Significance

Waypoint: For anyone crossing the Steppe of Aziirn, Lev's Salvation is a critical landmark and supply point. The spring provides water; the caves provide shelter; the tor provides orientation. Trade routes and travel paths reference it as a waypoint.

Gathering Point: Steppe nomads use Lev's Salvation as a meeting place—neutral territory where different groups can negotiate, trade, or simply exchange news. The spring supports temporary camps, and the caves can shelter significant numbers during storms.

Sanctuary Tradition: By custom, violence is forbidden at Lev's Salvation. The legend implies divine protection, and pragmatism reinforces the taboo—damaging the only reliable shelter for hundreds of miles would be catastrophically stupid. Even sworn enemies observe truce while within sight of the tor.

Why It Matters

Lev's Salvation makes travel across the Steppe of Aziirn possible. Without it, the steppe would be a death trap—no water, no shelter, no landmarks. With it, the steppe becomes merely dangerous. The formation is one of those geographic features that shapes everything around it, determining routes, enabling trade, and making regions accessible that would otherwise be impassable.
