The Evertorch burns in the cathedral at Tarkhetan's center. It has burned since the Neferati founders lit it six centuries ago from sacred fire brought north out of Yaif. It has never been extinguished, not through the Severance, not through any of the dynastic transitions that followed, not through the three centuries since human hands took the throne.

The flame burns without visible fuel. It requires no maintenance and responds to no weather. Scholars have studied it for generations without reaching agreement on its source.

"The Fire leyline runs directly beneath Tarkhetan—the flame is a surface expression of the same power that produces the Firemage Corps. There is no mystery here, only geology."Vaznik of Tarkhetan, On the Seam Beneath the Old City, c. 3290 SD

"No leyline surface expression burns without variation for six centuries. Something was given to light this flame, and whatever was given is what keeps it. The question the cathedral avoids is: given by whom, and at what cost."Pembling of Grendenheim, Annals of the Seventh Dawn, c. 3330 SD

The Neferati consider the Evertorch theirs by right of founding, a heritage claim that every human emperor since the Severance has handled carefully rather than directly refused. The Kingdoms of Fire have not forgotten who lit it. The fire still burns with the character of Yaif's sacred flame, recognizable to any Neferati priest who stands before it.
