A vast forest shrouded in supernatural darkness in the southeastern reaches of the Frostmarch Peninsula. The Twilight Forest is one of the most dangerous and forbidding places in all of Clueanda—a realm where light itself has been cursed.
Geography
The Twilight Forest occupies the southern portion of the Frostmarch Peninsula, stretching across the southeastern end where the land begins its final descent toward the frigid waters. Unlike the snow-blanketed terrain of northern Frostmarch, the forest floor here is carpeted in black moss and fungal growth that thrives in the perpetual gloom.
The trees themselves are ancient—gnarled pines and twisted oaks that have adapted to the darkness over millennia. Their bark is nearly black, and they grow in dense, suffocating thickets that block what little light manages to penetrate the magical shroud above.
The Eternal Twilight
The entire forest is enchanted with an oppressive darkness that defies natural law:
- Light Suppression: Regular light sources produce only one-quarter their normal illumination. A torch that should light a 40-foot radius barely reaches 10 feet.
- Void-Deep Dark: The darkness is too profound for darkvision to penetrate—creatures relying on it see nothing but impenetrable black.
- Starless Sky: No stars are visible above the forest, even on the clearest nights. The sky appears as a featureless void.
- Perpetual Dusk: At its brightest—high noon on a cloudless day—the forest reaches only dim-light conditions.
The source of this curse is unknown, though some scholars believe it may be connected to Ural of the Third Moon's presence, while others claim the dragon was drawn here because of the existing darkness.
The Spindral
The Twilight Forest is home to the Spindral—the Quill Elves who fled underground generations ago to escape the dragon Ural of the Third Moon. Their ancestors sought refuge in the deep cavern systems beneath the forest floor, and over time they became creatures of shadow themselves.
The Spindral have fully adapted to life in perpetual darkness. Their midnight-black quills absorb what little light exists, and they have developed echolocation and Void-touched senses that function where eyes cannot. They venture to the surface only to hunt the forest's monstrous denizens and to maintain watch for signs of their ancient draconic enemy.
Spindral settlements exist entirely underground in carved warrens that honeycomb the bedrock beneath the forest. These communities are fiercely territorial—other underground races have learned that trespassing into Spindral territory is suicide.
Monsters of the Dark
The Twilight Forest teems with creatures that have evolved—or been twisted—to thrive in magical darkness:
- Shadow-stalkers that move unseen even by those with supernatural sight
- Eyeless predators that hunt by sound and tremor
- Void-touched beasts bleeding darkness from open wounds
- Things that were once other creatures before the dark changed them
The Spindral are among the few beings capable of surviving here, and even they travel in groups and maintain constant vigilance.
