The Spindral are elves who fled underground to escape the dragon Ural of the Third Moon. They are creatures of the Void and shadow now, and have not lived under open sky in a very long time. Their most striking feature is the long, midnight-black quills that sprout from their backs and arms, which seem to absorb all light that touches them.
They venture to the surface only to hunt and keep watch for their ancient draconic enemy. They are silent, deadly, and accustomed to a world without sun. Other underground races have learned to avoid Spindral territory. These elves do not negotiate with trespassers.
The making
Spindral darkness is not a thing the years did to them. It was done in one working, by one of their own, in the first generation underground. Ural of the Third Moon hunts by the glint of warm and living things in the dark, and a druid of the fleeing elves reasoned that a people who gave nothing back to the light could never be found. The working took. It raised the long midnight quills along their backs and arms, which drink the light that falls on them and return none of it, and it set the Void in them where a wood-elf carries the green pull of the forest. Every Spindral born since is born this way, quilled and lightless and turned toward the dark. The hiding became the people. They can no more bear the open sun now than they could once bear to be seen by the dragon.
