The Syngers condensed in the one part of Alaria that belongs to no plane in particular. Far above the Surfacelands, in the thin airless band beneath the titan-glass stars, the material world has run out and the Astral has not yet begun. The Ezz flood reached that height as little more than a haze, and where it settled there it never resolved into either life or death. The Syngers are what came of that unresolved settling. They do not age, sicken, or die of any cause the world below knows, because nothing in that band fully dies; and they regard the world with the flat, unbothered distance of beings in whom nothing was ever fully quickened to begin with. Their immortality and their detachment are one fact seen from two sides.

Terrestrial peoples almost never see them. A Synger measures time in millennia and finds the doings of shorter-lived races about as pressing as a tide finds a footprint in the sand. When one does descend to deal with the world below, the reason behind it tends to surface only centuries later, if ever. Their skin shifts constantly through vivid reds, violets, and blues, like a living aurora, and it shifts with their mood, which is most of what an outsider can read of a Synger at all.

They cross the high country in vessels no mortal shipwright can account for, silent craft that leave trails of colored light sometimes mistaken from the ground for falling stars. The vessels work heights no sky fleet can reach. What little ever passes between the Syngers and the surface passes up there, in the band where the heaviest skystone drifts, and it passes rarely, on terms the Syngers set and abandon without warning. They pass over a sleeping world without often troubling to touch it.

Game mechanics

Immortal Wanderer

Passive ability. You do not age and are immune to disease and poison. You need only one-tenth the normal amount of food and water, and you can survive in thin atmosphere that would suffocate others. Your long life has given you 3 additional background ranks to distribute as you choose.

Chromatic Flux

Major ability. Your emotional state causes your skin to shift through brilliant colors, creating hypnotic patterns. As an action, you can intensify this effect, forcing all creatures within 30 feet who can see you to make a cunning saving throw against your presence challenge number or gain 1 level of charmed toward you. Additionally, you can create bright light in a 20-foot radius or dim light in a 40-foot radius at will by glowing.
