The Guiltless are the tragic creation of the great wizard Thenry Gilmora, who sought to create the perfect servants of good by magically removing their capacity for evil. Born unable to lie, steal, harm others, or act with malicious intent, they were intended to be living saints who would guide the world toward righteousness.
Instead, they became victims. Their absolute honesty and inability to defend themselves made them easy targets for exploitation and abuse. Over thousands of years of mistreatment, however, the Guiltless have developed subtle methods of resistance and revenge that work within the constraints of their nature.
The Guiltless have interbred with humans across the world and can appear as any other human. The trait often skips generations, sometimes manifesting unexpectedly in someone's lineage - which can be catastrophic for those unprepared for its implications.
The making
Thenry Gilmora was a handmagician, and the Guiltless were made by a Deoric working, not by a blessing or a prayer. Handmagic of that order runs on titan blood and bone, the only matter that holds a Deoric charge, and Gilmora spent both freely. Deoric defines a thing by its true name, and he used it for the one purpose the language is built around: he bound a constraint into the true name of a living human line, walling out malice, deception, and the raising of a hand in harm. Deoric is paid for in life. A working cut that deep into a bloodline cost a great many lives, a price Gilmora set without flinching against the saints he was certain he was making. Because he altered the definition and not only the people in front of him, the change descended. It runs recessive and surfaces unannounced generations down a line, so the working is still spending its terrible gift on people who never asked Gilmora for anything.
