The Glorindian dwarves work the deepest gold mines of the eastern mountains, and a Glorindian sees gold the way other people see daylight. Their golden eyes perceive the glimmer of the metal through solid stone, making them unparalleled prospectors and treasure hunters. This gift has made them targets of exploitation throughout history, which is why many Glorindian communities are secretive and nomadic.
The making
The gold-sight was made on purpose, and not for them. A Krondeum adept named Korvenum, set to find a faster way to empty the eastern lodes, cut a Deoric command into titan-bone and spoke it over a single mining clan. He meant to make a tool: miners who could read ore through rock and never sink a wasted shaft. The command did what he asked and more than he intended. It fixed the gold-sense into their eyes, which have burned a luminous gold ever since, and the life-price of the working scorched their skin to black obsidian as it spent itself. The clan he remade bred true, and their descendants are the Glorindians. Korvenum got his prospectors. What he had actually done was make a people whose every child would be hunted for the gift he gave them, which is the part the mining-songs leave out.
Their obsidian-dark skin contrasts strikingly with their luminous golden eyes, which seem to glow faintly in darkness. Glorindian culture values wealth as a measure of one's connection to the earth's hidden treasures rather than as a means to luxury. They believe gold calls to those worthy of finding it, and that hoarding beyond one's needs brings misfortune.
