Edric is the youngest of the three siblings who divide Ofrenia, and the one the island has written off. He holds Joswik, the broad and broken south, from a modest palace at Padena that his father built for use rather than show. The common account of him is that he is the defensive sibling: the prince who fortifies his hills and waits for his elder sister to come for him. The waiting is real. Tornia's armies sit on the contested border, Padena swells with refugees, and Edric prepares for the invasion everyone on the island expects. The passivity behind the account is the part that is wrong.

For years Edric has been trying to make peace with Alisandra. He has offered to fix the contested border on the old line, to split the Gulf customs evenly, to stand down the garrisons by mutual count. Not one overture has held. A truce collapses over an insult neither court will admit to giving. A convoy carrying his goodwill grain is raided at the worst possible moment and read in the north as a feint. An envoy comes home with a refusal sealed in arms that look like Edric's own but carry terms he never set.

In the spring of this year Edric sent his steward north with an offer to settle the border and share the Gulf tolls. The steward reached Catalina to find a letter already three days arrived, sealed with the prince's own device, withdrawing the offer and demanding a tribute Edric had never named. The steward had carried no such letter. He came home not knowing what to tell his master, and told him the truth, which helped nothing.

What Edric cannot work out is why it never holds. He blames Alisandra's bad faith, then his own poor timing, then the bad luck that seems to find every messenger he sends. He does not suspect Sylke, because no one suspects Sylke. The brother in the middle is the one party in the dispute everyone trusts to be too small and too quiet to matter, which is exactly the cover Renato spent twenty years building. So Edric fortifies, and waits, and keeps trying for a peace that his own brother unmakes before it ever reaches his sister's hand.
