Sylke occupies the center-west of Ofrenia, its territory running along the island's western coast between the richer lowlands of Tornia to the north and the mountain-backed holdings of Joswik to the south. Of the three Ofrenian kingdoms it is the smallest and the poorest, the strip of rough country the other two never thought worth taking. It is also the only one of the three that is exactly where it wants to be.
Prince Renato rules from Bridgeton, where an ancient bridge carries the western road across the river toward the coast and the royal palace watches everything that crosses. That bridge is the point of the whole kingdom. Sylke holds the only easy passage across the island's waist, and the interior on either side of it is broken enough to choke any march, which is why neither of Renato's siblings has ever been able to move against him and why all the island's overland traffic has to ask his leave. He grants it and withholds it as the season requires.
