Sylke occupies the center-west of Ofrenia, its territory running along the island's western coast between the richer lowlands of Tornia to the north and the mountain-backed holdings of Joswik to the south. Of the three Ofrenian kingdoms it is the smallest and the poorest, the strip of rough country the other two never thought worth taking. It is also the only one of the three that is exactly where it wants to be.

Prince Renato rules from Bridgeton, where an ancient bridge carries the western road across the river toward the coast and the royal palace watches everything that crosses. That bridge is the point of the whole kingdom. Sylke holds the only easy passage across the island's waist, and the interior on either side of it is broken enough to choke any march, which is why neither of Renato's siblings has ever been able to move against him and why all the island's overland traffic has to ask his leave. He grants it and withholds it as the season requires.

The war between Tornia and Joswik runs through Sylke, and not by accident. Renato manufactures it. Every envoy Edric of Joswik sends north to sue for terms passes through Bridgeton, where the letter that arrives in Catalina is rarely the one that left; raids in the shipping lanes are timed and blamed where they will do the most good; a slight is forged here, a convoy lost there, and Queen Alisandra reads each one as proof of her brother's bad faith and fortifies further. None of it shows Sylke's hand. The kingdom presents itself as the one neutral party on a divided island, the broker everyone can still deal with when the lanes go dangerous, and it charges accordingly. Its borders have never been formally settled, and Renato has no wish to settle them. An unmade peace is the kingdom's whole livelihood.
