Breia is a mountain state carved out of the Drystone Mountains' central valleys. Six settlements — Iara, Dalir, Eyrar, Jamtaland, Kopanes, and the ruins of Shtaneres — are strung along the dry watercourses and spring-fed hollows that make settled life possible here. Iara serves as the capital, governing a population that has learned to treat water as a currency as precious as ore.

Geography

The Drystone Mountains run roughly east–west through the heart of the Sandreach range. Breia occupies the valleys between those ridges: narrow corridors where flash-floods recarve the terrain after rare storms and where the exposed rock face bakes in heat reflected off the surrounding desert. Seasonal streams allow cultivation in terraced plots, but most food is traded into the region through the mountain passes.

The fire leyline from Belu Jenari passes through Breia on its southward course. Its presence has been felt for centuries — the region runs warmer than altitude should permit, evaporation is punishing, and the stone itself hoards heat long after sunset. Ancient builders recognized the leyline's value and raised structures along it; their successors in Breia still live among those half-standing walls.

Shtaneres

At Breia's eastern edge, the fire leyline crosses the air leyline. The ancient city of Shtaneres was built precisely at that intersection to harness both currents simultaneously. The experiment ended catastrophically — the city is rubble, its structures collapsed by a magical detonation whose exact cause is still debated. What survives is Hermelia's Lair, a fortified sub-complex within the ruins, and a landscape of fused stone and glassy craters that gives the site its current reputation as one of the more dangerous locations in the Sandreach.

The five living settlements of Breia treat Shtaneres with respectful distance. Scavengers pick through the outer ruins and a modest trade in recovered artifacts moves through Iara's markets, but the inner site stays avoided except by those with a specific reason to go — and the means to survive it.
