Type
Body of Water

A narrow passage of water at the southern end of the Tyvern island chain, separating the archipelago from the lands to the south. The strait is named for an old word meaning "wind-path": the passage funnels air currents into unpredictable gusts that make sailing tricky and swimming inadvisable.

Winzy Strait sees little traffic. No major trade routes pass through it; the waters lead to regions that generate neither significant exports nor demand for imports. Ships that use the strait are typically local fishing vessels, Tuktuk boats moving between their islands, or the occasional traveler who specifically wants to reach somewhere that most people don't go.

Character

The strait is unremarkable in most respects: deep enough for navigation, free of the hazards that plague Scatter Sound, lacking the supernatural dangers of the Isle of the Night's approaches. Its main challenge is the wind, which accelerates through the narrow passage and shifts direction without warning. Sailors who know the strait time their crossings carefully; those who don't find themselves fighting crosswinds that turn a simple passage into exhausting work.

The shores on both sides are sparsely populated. The southern Tyvern islands hold a few Tuktuk villages that watch the strait more from habit than necessity. The mainland coast to the south is... quiet. Whatever lies in that direction doesn't attract attention or visitors.

Isolation

Winzy Strait's lack of strategic or commercial importance has left it largely ignored by the powers that contest other waterways in the region. The Tuktuk don't patrol it heavily; the Kappa have no interest in it; no one fights over passage rights because no one particularly wants to pass through.

This isolation has its own value. The strait is useful precisely because no one watches it. People who want to move without being noticed, who want to reach places without explaining why, who want to leave the more trafficked waters behind, they use Winzy Strait. They come in small numbers, but steadily enough that the local Tuktuk have learned not to ask questions about the occasional unfamiliar boat.
