The Free Colonies are a loose confederation of three self-governing settlements on Ayashk Island, positioned at the narrowest crossing of the Deaddore Strait. The name reflects their founding character: each settlement — Ashk, Drusikia, and Vania — was established as an independent colonial outpost and has since resisted incorporation into any mainland power. They share no single ruler. A joint assembly convenes in Ashk, the largest of the three, to coordinate harbor dues, maritime patrol, and defense; all other matters of law and governance each settlement handles for itself.
The Colonies' influence outstrips their size. Any fleet threading the Deaddore Strait between the western coast and the Riptear Sea must pass within range of the island's patrol vessels, and the assembly charges accordingly. This toll-keeping is the confederation's primary revenue and the main source of friction with traders who would rather see the strait unguarded. The Colonies have survived larger powers' interest in absorbing them precisely because occupying the island ends the maritime revenue — the crossing fees only flow as long as the Colonies remain nominally free.
Relations among the three settlements are practical rather than warm. Ashk, as the assembly seat, wields soft authority its neighbors resent and depend on in equal measure. Drusikia and Vania each maintain their own councils and militias, and disputes over patrol boundaries and toll splits are a routine feature of the joint assembly's agenda. For the geography of the island itself, see Ayashk Island.
