The Griebi are blueish-gray skinned orcs who can breathe underwater and rarely speak above the surface. They hunt and fish in the depths of lakes and rivers, using their terrifyingly rows of long, needle-like teeth to catch prey underwater. Their society is ruled by a mysterious hag queen who dwells in the deepest waters.
These silent orcs are built for the water, formidable opponents above and below the surface.
The making
Every orc was made in a single stroke at Mount Kajiit, where the eruption that ended the God War spilled more Deoric command than its working could spend, and the overflow rewrote the survivors hard enough to outlast the Long Winter. The first Griebi took that stroke underwater. They had fled the ashfall into a flooded quarry at the mountain's foot, and the overflow reached them through the water, which set the terms the fire could not. A rewrite meant to harden a creature against the killing winter instead bound one to the cold lake it was caught in. Gills that seal shut in dry air, a double row of needle teeth for taking fish in the black, skin the blue-gray of deep water: the cut was narrow and it bred true. It left a people finished below the surface and unfinished above, which is the whole of why a Griebi hunts, speaks, and answers its queen in the water, and breaks the surface only when forced.
