The Drifting Isles are what their name promises: a loose archipelago of landmasses that move. Carried by a combination of deep magical currents and seasonal tides, the islands shift position over weeks and months, making accurate charts nearly impossible. Most dangerous are the islands that lie just beneath the surface—invisible from a ship's deck, shallow enough to rip away a keel. Experienced captains rely on local knowledge, purpose-drawn charts updated after each major shift, and navigational magic to read the current's intent. Novice sailors attempting the crossing rarely complete it; the waters between Sheîr to the northeast and Istokos to the southeast see regular wreck recoveries after storms push the islands out of their expected positions.

The Swordsmen are the people shaped by this landscape. A tribal culture who have lived among the moving islands for generations, they build no permanent settlements—instead following the islands as they drift and making camp on whatever landmasses are stable at a given time. Their name comes from twin bonds: mastery of the sword, and a sacred affinity with the swordfish that inhabit these waters. Swordsmen treat the swordfish as partners, not prey. The fish swim alongside their canoes as scouts, signaling submerged hazards and incoming crosscurrents; in return, the Swordsmen drive away sharks and protect spawning grounds. A Swordsman who harms a swordfish is cast out from the tribe.

The Swordsmen trade navigation through the archipelago to passing ships, and most of those ships are Drachma. The seafaring humans crew the merchantmen and pirate craft that work every western channel, and a Drachma captain who values his keel hires a Swordsman pilot rather than trust a chart the islands have already outrun. A Swordsman pilot is the surest way across the Drifting Isles, and they name their price in iron.
